Up the creek with a paddle

On Saturday 22 July, ten of our Confirmation candidates enjoyed a fun day of paddling on the Waveney (Bungay Loop), led by two professional coaches.   In addition to learning kayaking skills, the day was designed to help develop confidence, teamwork and leadership, and above all, provide an opportunity for a bit of healthy fun in the fresh air and sunshine, surrounded by friends and Mother Nature.

The action commenced at Bungay Staithe where the local canoe club had kindly given us the use of their equipment and facilities.   Once all the participants were kitted out with a kayak, paddle and buoyancy aid, Fr Charles sent the colourful crew on their way with a blessing and a prayer for fine weather… and his prayer was clearly answered as, despite heavy rain earlier that morning, Bungay basked in warm sunshine for the rest of the day!

Our paddlers stopped for a picnic lunch and swim at Outney Meadow and, following a few practice seal launches, made their way back to the Staithe, where they enjoyed a noisy game of tag on the river.

By the time things came to a close around 4pm, all were paddling with confidence, with some appearing to take great pleasure in getting a good dunking!

Ten very wet, exhausted but smiling teenagers were welcomed out of the river by their parents and taken home where, hopefully, they enjoyed a good night’s sleep.

Huge thanks to everyone involved in organising the event, to the coaches, Keith and Martin, and also to both Bungay Canoe Club and Outney Common Caravan Park for the use of their facilities.
