Bishop Alan visits St Edmund’s

Marking his first visit to Bungay, Bishop Alan celebrated Mass with us in St Edmund’s, making our Family Mass and Mothering Sunday very special indeed.    During his opening remarks, the Bishop commented on the splendour of St Edmund’s, especially the baptistery, reminding us of how lucky we are to have such a beautiful church.

As this was a Family Mass, the children of the parish did the readings and bidding prayers and the children’s choir led the congregation with two of the hymns, Ave Maria and Amazing Grace.   Before the final blessing, Bishop Alan called all the children to the front for a “private” chat (although the adults were allowed to listen in!). During his lively exchange with the children, he explained his three key roles as Bishop – apostle, shepherd and teacher.

After Mass, Bishop Alan greeted the congregation outside the church and admired the lovely posies being presented to all the mothers by Julie, Evie and Esme.  He then joined us for coffees and cakes in the Hall, where he took the opportunity to thank Fr Charles for all the work he does in our parish. In return, Fr Charles thanked Bishop Alan for his support.

In addition to celebrating Mass, Bishop Alan also met with many of the First Holy Communion and Confirmation candidates from our parish. His visit may have lasted just one morning, but it was a truly memorable occasion for everyone.

The Family Mass with Bishop Alan was truly memorable and my family and I loved being part of it. We look forward to his next visit. My Mother’s Day flower posy is opening up and looking lovely!
